System Validation

Magneti Marelli Powertrain develops (diesel and gasoline) engine control systems and (traditional and dual clutch) transmission control systems.

 

A control system, by its very nature, can be defined as a set of components (logical and physical) interfaced one with the other, with other systems/components and with the entire vehicle. This means that it is not enough to define and carry out the validation activities of each stand-alone component but, given the growing complexity of the vehicles and of their architecture, it is increasingly important to carry out validation activities of the system and of the integration between the system in question, the other systems and the vehicle.

 

Magneti Marelli Powertrain carries out system validation activities on the vehicle thanks to skilled technical personnel that use ad hoc instrumentations to carry out complex activities that perfect the tests already carried out during the system design and development phases. All system validation activities pursue the same objectives and are based on the same prerequisites.

 

 

The objectives are to verify:

  • the proper functionality of the control system
  • the compliance with customer requests in terms of functionality and reliability
  • the robustness of the system (ability of the system to tolerate the presence of faults or anomalies)
  • the safety of the system

Each type of control system developed by Magneti Marelli Powertrain has its distinctive features; consequently, the system validation activities consist of common activities and of certain specific tests for which specific skills are needed. The common activities consist of all those tests needed to verify contents and functions found on all systems, including:

  • Vehicle conformity test
  • Pre-wired test
  • Power supply and earth cut-out test: 
  • Diagnostics and recovery tests: 
  • Communication with diagnostic tools test:
  • Service procedures test: 
  • Measure of components vibrations on the vehicle:
  • Measure of components temperatures on the vehicle:
  • Electromagnetic compatibility test
  • Hardware integration tests on the vehicle:

The validation activity is organized so as to be perfectly in synch with the crucial product development phases, in order to promptly pinpoint any areas of improvement and reduce the time-to-market, thus guaranteeing high quality standards.
