In order to quickly allow optimal development of the control system, all the techniques and all the modularity and scalability principles of the hardware of the electronic control unit (ECU) and of the software were used to a great extent. This means that the “logic core” of the ECU stays basically unchanged for all engines and vehicles, while specific solutions are adapted and personalized for each family of engines or vehicle model. This also leads to another advantage that is anything but negligible, and which consists in maintaining all the performances and characteristics requested by the carmaker and by the final customer.

The same approach has guided the software development, consequently, a set of “plug and play” controls that can be assembled according to the customer’s requirements are available.

 

The specific management software for Port Fuel Injection (PFI) engines is developed through a design based on:

  • Modular-type, model-based software architecture for a reutilization that crosses over different applications
  • automatic generation and optimization of the SOFTWARE code
  • SPICE 2-certified development process
  • AUTOSAR compliant
  • ISO 26262 compliant
  • Pre-calibration in a simulated environment

 

The main control functions are:

  • Complete management of the torque delivered by the engine; Magneti Marelli has been producing a system based on torque control with a three-level supervision since 1999
  • Supply pressure control
  • Multi-injection management (up to 8 multi-injections, each one with its own duration independent from the others)
  • Swirl/tumble actuators management
  • Turbo boost management through turbocharger (including the one with variable geometry)
  • Management of motorized throttle (TVA: Throttle Valve Actuator) to adjust the quantity of air when the engine turns off and during regeneration
  • Management of the “Low Pressure” EGR (“Long Route” upon request)
  • Management of NOx and DPF trap
  • Control of polluting gases emission according to regulations in force in the various countries where the products are marketed; catalytic converter activation and control strategies
  • Control of CO2 emissions (fuel consumption management) (reduced consumption)
  • Management of pre-heating glow plugs with both low and high voltage (Low Voltage Glow Plugs; High Voltage Glow Plugs)
  • SCR (Selective Catalyst Reduction) management integrated in the ECU or through interface with dedicated electronic device
  • Immobilizer
  • Management of communication protocols: CAN, LIN, K line

 

The Time-to-Market is reduced thanks to fast prototyping, which also allows customization according to the customer’s requests.

Magneti Marelli supplies “turnkey” systems, in other words systems that are completely optimized from the calibration standpoint thanks to full and specific skills developed over the last decades at different facilities located in Europe, China, United States, India and South America where, thanks to the necessary competences, systems are developed depending on the different needs of the markets.
