The dual-clutch transmission is a special type of transmission that originates as the evolution of the robotized manual transmission: this solution uses two separate clutches for odd and even gear sets.
The dual-clutch transmission has two shafts connected to two clutches, which are in turn connected to a drive shaft. One shaft houses the odd gears, while the second one houses the even gears: the inner shafts spin at the same time but only one of them, thanks to a clutch, transfers motion to the drive shaft. In the meantime, the even gear shaft continues to spin to get the next ratio ready.
The advantage consists in significantly faster gear changes, which results in greater vehicle comfort.
Magneti Marelli produces hydraulic actuation systems and control units for dual-clutch transmissions featuring a high sporty feel and great efficiency of the transmission system.
