Adaptive lighting systems (AFS = Advanced Frontlighting System) by Automotive Lighting support the driver by illuminating the street, the verge, curves and also dark corners.
Driving at night and in bad weather conditions becomes significantly safer and more comfortable.
Besides the standard functions low beam and high beam, Automotive Lighting additionally realises Dynamic Curve Light, Cornering Light and Motorway Light.
Dynamic curve light
Whilst driving, an electronic control unit continuously evaluates the range of dynamic driving parameters during the journey, such as the steering angle, speed and yaw rate of the vehicle.
Based on this analysis, the lamps of the low beam unit automatically swivel horizontally in accordance with the radius of the curve, ensuring that the road is optimally illuminated.
This improves visibility by up to 70% compared to conventional headlamp systems, and makes night driving safer as well as more comfortable.
In 2003 Automotive Lighting was the first to introduce the BMW3 coupe and convertible with dynamic curve light.
Cornering Light
The cornering light is activated at a lower speed while bending a curve and/or activating the turn indicator.
Thereby the verge and narrow curves are illuminated better.
Cornering light can be realised by an additional light source inside or outside the headlamp or alternatively in the bumber, as cost optimized solution with the application of the fog lamp.
Motorway Light
The Motorway Light is additionally switched on at a speed of 90 km/h.
Actuators thereby lift the projection module successively. In parallel with accelerating speed, the performance of the Xenon lamp is increased.
That way, the illumination range of the low beam is extended up to 160m.
By activating an additional light source, an advanced Motorway Light is switched on.
This means an increase of the illumination rang up to 190m.
