Lane Departure Warning

The Lane Departure Warning (LDW) systems detects the lane the car is driving in, measures the position of the vehicle compared to the lane and provides the indications and warnings (acoustic, visual and/or haptic) for non-intentional deviation from the lane/roadway; for example, the system does not intervene when the driver turns on the direction arrows, thus signalling an intended lane change.

Operation

The system detects and measures the vehicle position compared to the lane dividing lines as well as the lateral movement in order to estimate the lane crossing time, then it provides a warning signal before the vehicle actually crosses the dividing line.

The LDW detects various types of lane dividing lines: continuous, broken, boxed and cat’s-eyes. In the absence of signals, the system can use the sides of the road and the sidewalks as references (patent pending).

Its operation is ensured at night too, when the headlamps are switched on.

The system is especially useful to help the driver avoid skidding due to distraction or sleepiness on roads that require a low level of attention, such as motorways or long and straight stretches.

The driver can also be given the possibility to choose a different degree of reaction time of the system, to be selected among various levels:
  • EXCLUDED
  • SAFE
  • NORMAL
