Magneti Marelli

The laboratories are an asset

The technical laboratories

The equipment available in Magneti Marelli's technical laboratory represents an asset that has been a constant companion in the company's development.

With regards to this, one simply has to recall that Enrico Fermi was at one point head of the Laboratories of the company Industrie Magneti Marelli, forefather of the current Magneti Marelli.

In the Automotive sector, quality requirements are of fundamental importance. Consequently, next to the traditional materials laboratories, other laboratories were soon added to verify the Engine and Vehicle performance, known as “Engine Benches” and “Roller Benches”.

These are used to assess the reliability performances of the components, by recreating the most rigorous environmental conditions.

Benches for the development of software and computer checks were recently introduced.

Here, in a laboratory environment the actual operation of the engine control unit is simulated, varying the configuration and parameters of the variables being studied.

The cooperation with universities

A single company’s equipment is not enough, however: universities also possess laboratories and instruments, as well as an applied research capability that is in synergy with that of Magneti Marelli.

For example, the studies on electromagnetic and chemical-physical properties of materials are regularly carried out in cooperation with the universities.

The excellence hubs

A network of 10 large virtual laboratories has been set us in Italy (called LAB NET), which satisfies basic research needs in three Technological Clusters:
  • Mechatronics & Automation
  • Design and Simulation
  • New materials, linings and nanotechnologies.

Magneti Marelli has based its JRAUM proposal on the building of a virtual laboratory that creates a synergy between its own research centres and those of the academic institutions.

The result of the cooperation with institutions and universities, in Brazil we find the most advanced research centre in South America in the area of engine and vehicle applications, where the FlexFuel technology was developed.
