Polestar to open 20 China stores by end of 2020
Polestar aims to open 20 stores in China by the end of next year to tap local demand for luxury electrified vehicles.
The first store will open in the Chinese capital city of Beijing in the third quarter. In addition to Beijing, Polestar plans to open stores in nine other major Chinese cities: Shanghai, Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Chengdu, Chongqing, Wuhan, Xi'an, Nanjing and Xia'men before the end of next year.
Volvo made the Polestar Performance business a stand-alone brand in 2017. It has rolled out two production models under the brand: the Polestar 1 hybrid coupé and the Polestar 2 all-electric midsize sedan. Both vehicles will be produced in China. The Polestar 1 will be built at a plant jointly owned by Volvo and its corporate parent, Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, in the southwest China city of Chengdu, with production to begin by mid-year. Production of the Polestar 2 will start in early 2020 at Geely's Luqiao factory in east China's Zhejiang province, which builds the Volvo XC40 and the Lynk and CO 01 crossovers.
The three vehicles are all based on Volvo's new compact car platform dubbed Compact Modular Architecture.
