Magneti Marelli at the 82nd Salon International de l’Automobile in Geneva

03/09/2012

There is a strong presence of Magneti Marelli technologies on many of the 140 previews presented in Geneva. From lighting to engine control systems, from instrument clusters to infotainment systems, from suspensions to exhaust systems: all of Magneti Marelli’s technological areas can be found on the new automobiles presented by global carmakers.

Special focus on the  Fiat 500L, for which Magneti Marelli’s contribution ranges from lighting systems (headlamps and DRL – Daylight Running Light), to exhaust systems and suspension components. Not to mention the body computers and bumpers, and the engine control units for the 1.3 MultiJet II  e 0.9 TwinAir Turbo. The 500L will also be equipped with the Freechoice® AMT (Automated Manual Transmission) by Magneti Marelli, which guarantees the highest driver comfort with considerable reduction in fuel consumption and consequently lower emissions.

The Magneti Marelli AMT is also fitted on the Fiat Panda 0.9 TwinAir Turbo 85 CV Dualogic. This car features all of the many components designed by Magneti Marelli for the third generation of the Italian city car: lighting components, electronic engine control units, instrument panel, suspension systems and shock absorbers, exhaust systems and plastic components (bumper and tank).

There is also plenty of anticipation for the presentation of the Peugeot 208. In addition to the throttle bodies for the new generation of 3-cylinder 1.0 VTi and 1.2 VTi gasoline engines, the car features the new in-vehicle multimedia infotainment system supplied by Magneti Marelli, called “Touchscreen” on the 208. This is an innovative modular system that offers driver and passengers various entertainment and information functions in the car. It  can play music files from portable devices (cell phones, MP3 readers), display photos and access a new generation of “connected” services  called “Peugeot Connect Apps”, available during the course of 2012, thanks to the Peugeot Connect connection key. Connected to the vehicle CAN network, it can provide information on vehicle and navigation, through a 7” touch-screen with high resolution (800x480 pixel)  Thanks to the Bluetooth 2.0 connection, the system allows a hands-free and audio streaming function, and can be paired up with a maximum of 5 mobile phones. The USB port allows the connection of devices such as USB pen drives or iPods.

Citroën presents the Aircross version of the C4, a compact SUV fitted with Xenon or halogen headlights with AFS (Adaptive Frontlighting System) and in-vehicle multimedia entertainment system and USB and Bluetooth connectivity, both supplied by Magneti Marelli.

Moving on to the supercars, for the new Ferrari F12berlinetta, Magneti Marelli supplies many high-tech components, such as the multifunction instrument cluster with TFT display, LED rear lights and electronic control unit with related software to control the Active Brake Cooling system, in other words cooling fins of the brake air intakes that open upon request depending on the temperatures. The F12berlinetta can also be fitted with the “superlift” on the front axle: a system of hydraulic drives managed by a pump operated by an electric motor and controlled by an electronic unit that lifts up the car so that it can easily go over speed bumps.

As for Porsche, Geneva is the stage for the world preview of the new Boxster, to be marketed with an instrument cluster made by Magneti Marelli inspired by the distinguishing design of the Stuttgart cars. The three characteristic circles include all information useful to the driver: speedometer on the left, rev counter in the middle, and a 4.6  TFT (Thin Film Transistor) multipurpose display on the right. The instrument panel also has a built-in loudspeaker amplifier.

Magneti Marelli’s technologies will be fitted on the many versions that have undergone a face lifting to a various degrees, such as the new Audi A4 and RS4 Avant, on which halogen or Xenon with AFS headlamps and LED rear lights are used. This car is also fitted with a instrument cluster supplied by Magneti Marelli.

In the area of concept cars, Magneti Marelli worked with Pininfarina to develop the Cambiano, fitted with a traction system consisting of four electric motors, one for each wheel, and of the relevant moto-reducer. The motors, made by Magneti Marelli, are assembled on the front and rear frames, and each one delivers constant power of 60 kW, with peaks of 150kW, for 600 kW of maximum total power with a torque of 640Nm.
